Service Immersion Group Experience
Alpha Sigma Phi members and leaders from across the country will come together for a week of service, cultural immersion, and values exploration in Central America this May/June. Trip participants will work alongside local residents on various projects. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with local children at an orphanage, work with school children in the communities they visit, and learn more about the cultural and political history of the country.
Alpha Sigma Phi will partner with the Fuller Center for Housing to plan and implement the service effort. Like most aid organizations in Central America, Fuller Center for Housing is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The organization is dedicated to eliminating poverty worldwide. Its mission is to promote collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide adequate shelter for all people in need worldwide. The organization provides the structure, guidance, and support communities need to build and repair homes for the impoverished in 70 communities and 16 countries.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SIG EXPERIENCE:
Participants in this immersion experience will be immersed in the culture of the host community. Cultural opportunities will provide participants with a true sense of life in the community and may include sight-seeing, music, dance, and community meals and events. Participants in this immersion experience will explore their personal values and the values of Alpha Sigma Phi. Participants will spend time in small group reflection and discussion throughout the week and will complete the experience with new exposure to values in action. Participants in this immersion experience will develop recognition of the value of using fraternal values to address community needs through civic engagement opportunities.
