Award and Scholarship Categories
The Fraternity has three categories of recognition: chapter and provisional chapter awards and citations, alumni and undergraduate awards, and undergraduate and graduate scholarship recipients. The descriptions of all three categories are listed below. Criteria for the awards can be found on the web submission form. Grand Senior Presidents Award
This is the highest honor a chapter can receive within Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. The chapter must be in good standing with Fraternity Headquarters and excel in all aspects of the Fraternity’s Annual Report. The Grand Senior President’s Cup is given each year to one chapter from a large Greek community (11 or more IFC fraternities) and one chapter from a small Greek community (10 or fewer IFC fraternities).
Alpha Kappa Pi Gold Cup
This cup is presented for achieving exceptional recognition in all areas of the Annual Report. The chapter must be in good standing to earn this cup.
Phi Pi Phi Silver Cup
This cup is presented for achieving significant recognition in all areas of the Annual Report. The chapter must be in good standing to earn this cup.
Alpha Gamma Upsilon Bronze Cup
This cup is presented for achieving notable recognition in all areas of the Annual Report. The chapter must be in good standing to earn this cup.
Most Improved Chapter Award
This award is given to the chapter that has demonstrated significant improvement from one award period to the other award period.
Louis Manigault Awards of Distinction
In honor of our principle founding father, the Fraternity issues awards in eight categories: Recruitment, Communications, Alumni/Parent Relations, Ritual, Service/Philanthropy, Finance, Standards & Risk Management, and Scholarship.
Gary A. Anderson Award for Membership Education
In honor of former Executive Director Gary A. Anderson, Westminster ’76, the Fraternity issues an award in his name to a chapter that has done the best of all chapters in the country in membership education.
Evin C. Varner, Jr. Distinguished Service Award
This is the Fraternity’s highest award presented to a previous Delta Beta Xi recipient for sustained superior alumni service to the Fraternity, above and beyond Delta Beta Xi. While potential criteria for the award is as varied as our brotherhood, general criteria include years of service, type of service, and significant achievements. The award was established as the Distinguished Service Award by the Grand Council in 1959.
Distinguished Merit Award
The Fraternity’s second oldest award for individual alumni. It may be presented to a brother in recognition of exceptional achievement and distinction in the brother’s profession or vocation. The award was established by the Grand Council in 1950.
Delta Beta Xi Award
This award is for sustained alumni service to the Fraternity. While potential criteria for the award are as varied as our brotherhood, general criteria include years of service, type of service, and significant achievements. To be inducted as part of a class, a brother must receive at least 2/3 of the points possible and must be in the top ten among all the nominees for that particular year.
Dr. Otto L. Sonder Chapter Service Award
This award is given annually to an alumnus who displays exceptional passion, commitment, and drive in support of a chapter, provisional chapter, or interest group as a Grand Chapter Advisor. Created during the 2006 Grand Chapter, the award recognizes those alumni who have helped to advance the mission and purpose of the Fraternity on a chapter level.
Undergraduate Hall of Fame and the Frank F. Hargear Memorial Award
Annually, the Fraternity recognizes no more than ten undergraduate men, of senior class standing, and inducts them into the Undergraduate Hall of Fame. The men inducted into the Hall of Fame are the Fraternity’s most accomplished undergraduate brothers that have made significant contributions to better their chapter and our organization. From those inducted, one man is chosen as the Frank F. Hargear Memorial Award recipient, which is the highest honor an undergraduate brother can receive. The award was created by the Grand Council in 1977.
First awarded in 1956, this award is the most prestigious scholarship the Fraternity bestows. Its recipient is always an undergraduate brother with an impeccable academic record, noted service to the community and Fraternity, and positions of distinction within his chapter.
Kleinoeder Graduate Scholar-of-the-Year
Named to honor Brother Howard Kleinoeder, Washington ’35, who donated $6.4 million to the Foundation upon his passing into Omega Chapter in 1990. This scholarship is presented to brothers pursuing graduate-level degrees at accredited institutions.
tbtm Book Scholarship
The Fraternity offers the to Better the Man Book Scholarship to all incoming male students at select colleges and universities where we are starting or re-starting a chapter of the Fraternity. Many of our chapters offer similar scholarships so please check with the Alpha Sigma Phi chapter at your campus to see if they offer any scholarships to new members. Consideration for the tbtm Book Scholarship will be given to members of an expansion group of Alpha Sigma Phi.
