FAQs for Better Man Weekend

As one of the top leaders in the chapter/provisional chapter, it is an officer's responsibility to attend the Better Man Weekend in its entirety. Officers are expected to attend the entire program to earn credit on the Annual Report. Chapter/provisional chapter officers must attend the same weekend together.

WHEN IS BETTER MAN WEEKEND?
Better Man Weekend - January 13 - 15, 2017

WHO FROM MY CHAPTER/PROVISIONAL CHAPTER IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND?
It is a requirement that every chapter/provisional chapter President, Treasurer, Sergeant-at-Arms, Marshal, Recruitment Director, Scholarship Director, Membership Education Director, and Brotherhood Retention Director from selected chapters/provisional chapters (unless otherwise communicated by Fraternity Staff) are in attendance. No proxies or substitutions are permitted. The aforementioned officers are expected to serve their entire term (until at least November 2017). Officers who fail to serve their entire term will be individually responsible for reimbursing the Fraternity for the true cost of their attendance at the program ($500 + any travel funds paid on the individual’s behalf).

HOW DOES MY CHAPTER/PROVISIONAL CHAPTER KNOW IF WE ARE SUPPOSED TO ATTEND?
Unlike in past years, Alpha Sigma Phi is selecting chapters and provisional chapters to attend Better Man Weekend based on the age of the chapter/provisional chapter. The chapter or provisional chapter will be notified by October 1, 2016 if they are selected to attend. All officers mentioned above must attend the weekend. WHAT IF MY ATTENDANCE TO BETTER MAN WEEKEND INTERFERES WITH CLASS/WORK?
If an officer is going to miss class or work as a result of Better Man Weekend, there is a letter in the back of the Attendee Guide that can be provided to an instructor/supervisor. It is highly recommended that officers notify all instructors/supervisors as soon as possible so they have plenty of advanced notification. Those who wait until the week or day before Better Man Weekend tend to find unsympathetic instructors and supervisors, causing logistical challenges for the officer and the chapter/provisional chapter. If these challenges do arise because of procrastination, you are still required to attend the program.

DOES THE FRATERNITY OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR TRAVEL?
Alpha Sigma Phi is happy to provide chapters or provisional chapters flying to St. Louis for Better Man Weekend a $200 per attendee (up to $1,600) travel grant to subsidize travel costs; we are happy to provide this travel grant thanks to the generous support from alumni donors. This grant only applies to groups outside of a 415-mile radius from the St. Louis Airport Marriott. Fraternity Staff will book your flight arrangements based on information indicated on registration, and any remaining balance will be placed on your chapter or provisional chapter's statement. 

ARE MY MEALS PROVIDED?
Better Man Weekend will provide attendees with the following meals: Friday dinner and late evening snack; all three meals on Saturday plus a late evening snack; and breakfast on Sunday. If an attendee needs additional snacks or beverages, he is encouraged to bring those with him or to bring some spending money. Attendees with dietary needs should communicate those needs on their registration form. Every effort will be made to accommodate dietary needs communicated in advance.


WHAT IS THE FRATERNITY'S CANCELLATION POLICY FOR BETTER MAN WEEKEND?
Selected chapters/provisional chapters are expected to send the President, Treasurer, Recruitment Director, Membership Education Director, Scholarship Director, Sergeant-at-Arms, Marshal, and Brotherhood Retention Director to Better Man Weekend (unless otherwise communicated by Fraternity Staff). If one of the aforementioned officers can no longer attend the program, they can no longer serve in their position and must be replaced. Proxies/substitutes/committee members are not permitted to attend in place of an officer.

The registration deadline is December 6, 2016 at 5 p.m. Replacements (a newly elected officer and not a proxy/substitute/committee member) can be made through January 6, 2017. After the registration deadline, only cancellations are accepted. In the event an officer needs to cancel, he must notify Fraternity Headquarters staff by email tbtm@alphasigmaphi.org. Phone calls are not an accepted form of cancellation.

Officers who cancel after January 6, 2017, do not show up to the program, or are asked to leave the program for violating the expectations agreement will be billed for the true cost of attending the program ($500) as well as any travel funds paid on their half by the Fraternity. Further, officers who do not serve in their position for the entire term (until at least November 2017) will be billed the true cost of attending the program ($500) as well as any travel funds paid on their half by the Fraternity. Said officers will be individually responsible for those costs and could be sent to collections for failure to pay.
