Chapter History

McDaniel College was founded as Western Maryland College in 1867. It was named for the Western Maryland Railroad because the College's first Board Chairman, John Smith of Wakefield, was also the president of the railroad. In July 2002, the College was renamed for an alumnus who had given lifelong service to the college.

An interest group of five men came together in fall of 2000. By the close of spring term 2001, membership in the group had grown to 21 men. During 2001-2002, the group contacted a number of national fraternities and selected Alpha Sigma Phi. In fall 2002, ten members of the interest group returned to campus and seven men participated in the Pledge Ceremony. The group operated as a fraternity on the campus and in spring 2003, colony status was achieved. The group chartered on May 3, 2003 in ceremonies on the MWSC Campus.

Epsilon Xi was recognized as the Best Greek Organization on campus for the 2004-05 academic year during the Campus Greek Awards held October 29, 2005. Established as the Brant Cup in 1976, the award is given each year to one Greek organization that stands above the rest. The award is based on five different categories: academics, honor societies, leadership, varsity sports and community service. Epsilon Xi was especially recognized for their level of superiority in the leadership category; as they averaged 5.7 leadership points per brother compared to 1.8 for the second-place organization. The Director of College Activities Mitchell Alexander, the person responsible for tallying the results, noted that Epsilon Xi held the most leadership positions of any group he had ever encountered.
