11/14/2012 - Foundation Seeking Undergraduates to Serve as Ambassadors

If you are currently an undergraduate who is passionate about the Fraternity and would enjoy earning some scholarship money then the Foundation has a great opportunity for you. The Alpha Sigma Phi Foundation is seeking to add 4-5 new undergraduate ambassadors. These men would participate in a brief training at the Academy of Leadership this January and would then assist the Foundation Staff in making thank you phone calls to donors who have given to the Fraternity. We know what you're thinking, is there a lot to it?

No, it's simple and painless. The Foundation's Staff will train you and give you everything you need to be successful. We just need an hour or two of your time each month. Not only will you be helping the Old Gal thank some of its most loyal supporters but you will have the opportunity to talk with and network with alumni from all over the country and from every professional background imaginable.

There is only one step you need to take to apply first, complete this online application and then hang tight. A member of the Foundation's Staff will contact you a few days after the deadline to set-up an interview if you meet the qualifications. For that information and more, get started on the application. Hurry, the deadline to apply is December 6, 2012.

11/13/2012 - Founders Day Challenge Underway

The 2012 Founders Day Challenge For Every New Brother has begun. Founders Day is not only a time for us to reflect on all that we have achieved, but it is also a time to reflect on the experience that made us who we are today. There is no doubt that we some more than others are the product of 167 years of extraordinary effort, commitment, focus, and brotherhood that has beaten the impossible odds and is legendary in its own right.

Alpha Sigma Phi is growing in size and in stature and has garnered recognition from parents, fraternity and sorority advisors, administrators, and alumni who have recently become re-engaged. Today our Fraternity stands among the best fraternities in America. Great promise and opportunity lie ahead if we can continue to offer our newest members the best fraternity experience possible.

This is our new reality because 167 years ago, three men sought to change the status quo and wanted to create an organization that added value to the lives of its members. You carried on that tradition as an undergraduate member and as an alumnus you remain committed to seeing the value that is Alpha Sigma Phi given to men who are so richly deserving.

Please contribute $167 towards this year's Founders Day Challenge For Every New Brother . Your contribution will support our newest members, men who saw something in Alpha Sigma Phi they could not find anywhere else on their campus. Right before our own eyes good men are becoming better men every day.

Please act now and make your gift of $167 or even $67 today by visiting the Fraternity's website. You can also mail your donation to Alpha Sigma Phi Headquarters. There is no better gift you can give to your Fraternity this Holiday season then to support this year's Founders Day Challenge For Every New Brother. The impact of your gift will be put to use immediately and will help the Fraternity offer the best educational experience possible. This year's challenge ends on December 31st, so please hurry!

11/13/2012 - Alpha Sigma Phi Launches Foursquare Badge

Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity is proud to announce that it has partnered with location-based social networking site Foursquare to launch a custom Alpha Sigma Phi badge. The Fraternity is one of the first to partner with Foursquare, furthering our vision to be relevant, replicable and recognizable.

Foursquare is a web and mobile application that allows registered users to post their location at a venue and connect with friends. Foursquare users can unlock the new Alpha Sigma Phi badge by checking in at their different chapter facilities or events, such as Academy of Leadership, Ralph F. Burns Leadership Institute, Elevate - National Leadership Conference, or the SIG Experience. Alpha Sigma Phi has greatly enhanced its Foursquare presence by leaving more than 120 tips at colleges and universities where we call home. In addition to the presence created by the National Fraternity, members and guests are also encouraged to add tips and pictures to their location.

The use of social media, and in particular Foursquare, enables our members to interact with each other in a transformative way.  The Fraternity is committed to being cutting-edge in terms of its use of social media and using it to further our communication strategy, explained Danny Miller, Director of Chapter and Colony Development. Our goal is that our members will visit chapters, learn about Fraternity history, leave tips and take photos, and share their experiences with others through the use of Foursquare.

Foursquare was founded in 2007 and has continued to grow each year. According to site, it has over 25 million users worldwide and more than 2.5 billion check-ins, with millions more every day. To follow Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity on Foursquare, visit www.foursquare.com/alphasigs

11/13/2012 - Delta Beta Chapter at Northern Michigan Holds 6th Annual Canned Food Drive

Fall and Winter can be a fairly cold time up in Marquette, Michigan and while this is great for all the fans of hockey and other winter sports, it makes it even tougher on those who are less fortunate. For this purpose, the brothers of the Delta Beta Chapter at Northern Michigan recently held their 6th Annual High Sticking Against Hunger canned food drive while tailgating before the Wildcats hockey game against the University of Michigan.

It's a great event, commented organizer Rafael Arroyo, Northern Michigan '08, we had total chapter participation in the event and anyone who donated got free food and beverages, as well as entered into a prize raffle. Over 100 people came out to support the cause and the chapter collected over 400 pounds of food to donate to the local Salvation Army.

The annual event has garnered much success and local news affiliates have covered the even to help promote it. You can view the story by visiting http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/news/story.aspx?list=~homelistssearch&id=820582#.UJvcBY403co

In a time of need, the members of the Delta Beta answered the call to Our Value of Charity and continue to make a positive impact in the Marquette community. And yes, the hockey team ended up winning their game that same night.

11/13/2012 - Alpha Sigma Phi's Value of Patriotism Takes Center Stage in November

Patriotism. A word heard often and defined many different ways. As one of the five cardinal values of Alpha Sigma Phi, the Fraternity places a great deal of importance in patriotism and is proud of all of its members who have done their best to exhibit pride in their country.

One such individual is Brother Larry Liss, Widener '62. After graduating from what was then Penn Military College, Brother Liss was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After earning his helicopter wings in 1966, he served as a combat helicopter pilot until February of 1968. He flew over 650 combat missions including one in which he and two other pilots flew unarmed helicopters in and out of a fire fight five times to rescue a company of soldiers that had been ambushed in Vietnam.

In 2009 the BBC Network produced a show entitled Helicopter Warfare that featured the heroic mission. To watch this video or learn more about Brother Liss and how he exhibited patriotism by serving his country in the military please visit www.larryliss.com

Currently Larry is retired though he works as a mentor through Widener College with the Leadership Initiative. To add to his collection of awards for service, Brother Liss is currently being recommended to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Larry Liss was a Founding Father of the Gamma Xi Chapter. When reached for comment he stated “Initiation made it all real. I have always felt that sense of Brotherhood around Alpha Sigma Phi. To those younger members who are just starting their involvement with the organization, they have a lot to look forward to. It's 50 years later and I still feel that sense of Brotherhood with the Fraternity.

11/05/2012 - Alpha Sigma Phi Announces the SIG Experience

Alpha Sigma Phi members and leaders from across the country will come together for a week of service, cultural immersion, and values exploration in El Salvador this May. Trip participants will work alongside the people of El Salvador on various projects. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with local children at an orphanage, work with school children in the communities they visit, and learn more about the cultural and political history of the country. Alpha Sigma Phi is proud to make the El Salvador service immersion trip the first in its Service Immersion Group (SIG) Experience.

From May 25 - June 1, AFLV and Alpha Sigma Phi will partner with the Fuller Center for Housing to plan and implement the service effort. Like most aid organizations in Central America, Fuller Center for Housing (fullercenter.org) is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The organization is dedicated to eliminating poverty worldwide. Its mission is to promote collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide adequate shelter for all people in need worldwide. The organization provides the structure, guidance, and support that communities need to build and repair homes for the impoverished in 70 communities and 16 countries.
