ALPHA SIGMA PHI CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH RAINN
September 19, 2014 - IT IS ON US...to stop sexual violence. The White House released "It's On Us", a bystander intervention campaign focused on mobilizing men and women to end sexual assault on college campuses.
Alpha Sigma Phi and RAINN are encouraging our men to intervene when they see a potential dangerous situation unfolding and to ensure that they have access to the help they need through the National Sexual Assault Hotline and local resources. Alpha Sigma Phi officially partnered with RAINN in 2013 to address the role of men in preventing sexual violence.
Alpha Sigma Phi has taken a firm stance on sexual violence and our support of RAINN by passing an official statement recognizing RAINN as an official partner at the 2014 Grand Chapter in Orlando, FL. Alpha Sigma Phi and RAINN are currently in the process of developing a checklist of materials that our chapters and colonies can use to create a safer community. These materials include cutting-edge educational initiatives, template letters to change sexual assault policies, and co-branded materials that advertise the National Sexual Assault Hotline. In addition, the national fraternity has stated that any man convicted of sexual assault will be suspended from the Fraternity, similar to what we expect from our host institutions.
“When we partnered with RAINN back in 2013, we challenged our men to take an active role in preventing sexual violence,” said Gordy Heminger, President and CEO. “The ‘It’s On Us’ campaign is a direct call to action for our men to be the leaders in our communities by advocating for accountability within their College or University. We promise to do the same as a national fraternity of Better Men. It is on us to take responsibility and stop sexual assault.”
RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE and online.rainn.org) in partnership with more than 1,100 local rape crisis centers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity partnered with RAINN in 2013 in a new values-based philanthropic initiative. Since that time, Alpha Sigma Phi has raised more than $11,000 for RAINN.
